Curiosity and Pi (Lots of Pi)

It’s been an active few months. Between the 12 Rules for Life blog posts, learning about self-publishing, mobile app development itself and working to get that app published in the Google Play store, and The Main Thing Journal, I’ve been learning a lot—sometimes through deliberate focus, sometimes by diving in and figuring things out as I go. This week I thought I'd spend some time reflecting on the last few months and share a few thoughts.

Pi Day is Coming!

March 14th (03/14) is nearly here, which makes it the perfect time to share my Pi coffee table books. If you’ve ever wanted to own a beautifully printed (and completely unnecessary) book filled with hundreds of thousands of—well, up to million—digits of Pi, this is your moment! The perfect Pi-Day gift for that hard-to-buy-for colleague or loved one! A wonderful complement to www.aRecipeForPi.com

There are 4 volumes available worldwide on Amazon, in harcover and paperback:

Wrapping Up 12 Rules for Life

I’ve finished writing about Jordan B. Peterson’s 12 Rules for Life, and there’s just one final post left—pulling everything together after some surprising, but not-so surprising, conclusions. It’s been an interesting journey, both in terms of the content and the process of structuring a long-form blog series. My personal deep dives and culmination of key thoughts has been incredibly rewarding.  I hope that they have been helpful for you, too. I set out with blogging to use it venue to organize my thoughts -- it's been very valuable for that!

Publishing, Self-Publishing, and More Publishing

Inspired by how easy Amazon has made it look, and a few brave souls of self-publishers, I had to learn what it takes to publish a book!  Repetition is the key to learning for me, so I'm happy to go through the process a few times! Suffice it to say, I’ve been learning a lot about Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing as I self-publish books - quarterly editions of The MAIN THING Journal, A Healthy Serving of Pi, and the trilogy of pi--A Slice of Pi, Another Slice of Pi, and Enough Pi Already! Putting it all together is a mix of logistics, formatting, and platform quirks.  My goal -- become more adept at bringing ideas to life! And of course, I can't help but include some numbers, software creation, and automation of the process. Fun stuff! (...for me, anyway!)

Exploring Mobile App Development

I was hoping the Inspiring Times Bible Clock app would be live on the Google Play Store by now, but "closed testing", as I discovered, is a required 2 week phase. I’m diving deeper into mobile app development—both from a technical perspective and in terms of getting an app out into the world. There’s a lot to learn, from design decisions to platform approval processes, but it’s been a great way to explore. To get familiar with the process, learn some Flutter (Google's mobile dev language), and try something interesting, I created an interesting little app, inspired by an "author clock", this app displays the time by selecting a Bible verse with that reference. Interestingly, once I started development on this, I started seeing similar projects being undertaken -- I guess there really something to the concept of "multiple discovery". Anyway, an early browser-based version is available at www.inspiringTimes.faith.  A more developed version, an Android app, will soon be available on Google Play. As soon as it's available it will be linked from my project portal site -- www.peterjconway.com

Refining The Main Thing Journal

After a few months of using The Main Thing Journal, I have some takeaways and adjustments in mind. One of the biggest things I’ve been thinking about: making objectives even more explicit. Tracking what matters is powerful, but refining how we frame our focus makes a big difference. If it matters, I need to measure it -- am I really making progress? If I were to review my days, what would jump out as my unspoken, non-explicit priorities and agenda? Am I making the right progress? Do I need to change course or am I advancing optimally? tmtJournal.com

What’s Next for Blog Posts?

In a couple weeks we'll start to look at The Friction Project, by Sutton and Rao. My intention is to look at managing the many types of friction we encounter in work and life -- there are definite applications at home an in the community, too!

There’s plenty to explore. Your input is most welcome!

Next week, we'll wrap up the 12 Rules posts.

Final Thought - Stay Curious!

These projects—publishing, app development, writing, and experimenting—are all part of the same process: learning by doing. Some ideas turn into something tangible (Pi books!), some evolve over time (TMT Journal), and some are just starting to take shape. But they all have one thing in common: curiosity.  If you're curious about what I'm up to, just reach out to me directly (eMail, X, FB, LinkedIn) or at PeterJConway.com

Curiosity -- as long as that’s there, I’ll keep building, experimenting, and encouraging you to do the same!
