In bowling, a 7-10 split refers to one of the most challenging pin configurations left standing after the first ball is rolled. This occurs when only the two back-row pins, the 7 and 10 pins, remain, with no other pins nearby to knock them down easily. The 7-10 split is considered one of the most difficult spare conversions in bowling due to the distance between the two pins and the angle required to hit both simultaneously. It is sometimes referred to as "bedposts" or "goalposts" due to the resemblance of the remaining pins to these objects. Successfully converting a 7-10 split usually requires a precise shot with a significant hook and pin action to deflect one pin into the other or bounce one pin off the side cushion into the other. Or, in my case, a great deal of luck. Converting a 7-10 split is rare and is regarded as a remarkable feat in the sport of bowling.
For a novice bowler, leaving a 7-10 split isn’t necessarily a bad thing—it guarantees at least 8 points for the frame. Not bad when it could be much worse! However, because it’s rare for even a seasoned bowler to convert this into a spare, it remains a less than ideal situation! In fact, the rate of converting a 7-10 split for a professional bowler, is about the same as an NFL kicker missing the single point conversion after a touchdown -- about 0.7%.
The 7-10 split serves as a poignant metaphor for navigating life’s complexities, especially when encountering challenging scenarios where success seems highly unlikely.
Just as the 7-10 split presents a daunting obstacle on the bowling lane, life often throws us into situations where success seems improbable, and failure feels inevitable. In these moments, we may find ourselves aiming for a good, if not perfect, outcome. Despite our best efforts and intentions, there are times when the odds are stacked against us, and success seems out of reach. In those instances, when you know the odds are against you, how will you respond?
I don’t stop when I’m tired, I stop when I’m done.

Like bowlers facing the 7-10 split with determination and hope, we, too, must confront adversity with courage and perseverance. Managing unlikely scenarios requires adaptability, creativity, and a willingness to try unconventional approaches. While failure may be possible, it also offers valuable lessons and growth opportunities. Like the bowler who learns from each attempt at converting the 7-10 split, we can glean insights from our setbacks and use them to inform our future decisions and actions. We may even learn that, in most cases, failure is not fatal—only a frustrating setback.
Occasionally, amidst challenges and failures, there are moments of unexpected success—times when we defy the odds and achieve remarkable feats. These moments, like converting the 7-10 split, remind us of our resilience, resourcefulness, and capacity to overcome obstacles. However, they can only occur when we make a valiant attempt. Our effort, successful or not, may inspire others to persevere in adversity and continue striving for excellence, even when the odds seem stacked against them. And they may succeed because of our attempt. In our "valiant attempt" we can develop the tools we need to overcome ever-increasing challenges.
The 7-10 split: a reminder that even in the face of improbable odds, persistence can lead to unexpected victories.
In essence, the 7-10 split serves as a powerful metaphor for the journey of life, where we encounter challenges, manage unlikely scenarios, deal with failure, and occasionally find ourselves surprised by success. By embracing the frustration and futility of the 7-10 split, we learn to navigate uncertainties with courage, resilience, and steadfast determination to pursue our goals, no matter how daunting the obstacles may seem.
(Note: while the 7-10 split is widely recognized as one of the toughest shots in bowling, statistically, it’s only the third most difficult. And as challenging as it may seem, it’s a reminder that no matter how tough our situation is, things could always be worse, of our own doing or from outside of our control.)
Failure isn't fatal. It's just a frustrating setback. Embrace it, learn from it, and try again.
Hopeless situations are inevitable. Failure is practically guaranteed. But is it fatal? Hopefully not—usually not. Will you recover? Yes, if you allow yourself to. Knowing that you will encounter no-win situations, you must be bold and courageous when facing such challenges. You are not the first to face these situations, and you won’t be the last. By embracing this reality, you can bolster your confidence and maintain morale. Face the challenge head-on, accept the setback, and move on to the next frame. You might be surprised by an unexpected success or your own resilience and the strength you attain to face the next challenge.
